An affiliate of Hyatt Hotels Corp has entered into a management agreement for the first Hyatt property in the Czech Republic. The “Sugar Palace” hotel project, currently being developed by UBM Development AG, will become the new Andaz Prague. Located at Senovážné Square, close to the city’s Old Town, the hotel is expected to open in 2022.

It was originally built in 1916, the neoclassical building, commonly known as the Sugar Palace, will have 175 guestrooms when it opens under its new flag. Public spaces will include three dining options, a fitness centre, a spa and approximately 4,840 square feet of event space.

Takuya Soyama, Vice President of development at Hyatt, said: “Prague has been a popular destination since the Velvet Revolution 30 years ago. The city of Mozart and Hrabal continues to inspire people to explore its rich offerings. With the addition of Andaz Prague, we are excited for Hyatt to have a brand presence in the three imperial cities of Europe – Vienna, Budapest and Prague – to grow our opportunities to cater to the luxury demand”.

As the capital of the Czech Republic, Prague was the first place in the world where the entire city was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site. It is known as the “City of a Thousand Towers”. The streets have hardly changed in hundreds of years; it’s almost as if time there has stopped. The city itself is Prague’s biggest attraction.

Prague’s old city is beautifully constructed and has a strong artistic atmosphere. If your time is tight, you can head straight to the Old Town and castle for a 1-day tour. The Old Town and the Vltava Old Town are the heart of Prague, surrounded by many colourful old buildings, including the town hall and Tyn Church. However, the highlight of walking in the Old City is the fairytale-like medieval streets and alleys. The shops in the Old Town are the best places to purchase souvenirs. The architecture of Charles Bridge over the river offers great views from early morning to evening.

Thomas Winker, CEO of UBM Development, added: “It is wonderful to be working alongside Hyatt to bring the Andaz brand to the Czech Republic. This hotel has great potential for those wishing to explore Prague, and we believe that the Andaz brand is the perfect choice for this culturally rich city”.

Earlier this year, the Andaz brand opened two other properties in Europe: the Andaz Munich Schwabinger Tor in Germany, and the Andaz Vienna Am Belvedere in Austria. Worldwide, the brand has 21 hotels.

Hyatt Hotels, headquartered in Chicago, has 20 brands in its portfolio. As of September 2019, these included more than 875 properties in over 60 countries across six continents.
